Yes You Can Afford Investment Property in Portugal

When it comes to discussing property around the world, property investment, market conditions and the way a real estate investment decision might pan out there are very few guarantees…but one thing is pretty much assured and that’s that there is a very strong year round demand to rent certain properties in Portugal.

These properties tend to be exceptionally well located close to the best golf courses and therefore priced pretty highly if you want to buy one of course…but if you’re looking for a valuable asset that will return you considerable rental income even during a shaky period such as this when no one quite knows whether prices will fall, you should at least consider such properties in Portugal.  And before you ask – yes you can afford investment property in Portugal and here’s how…

You need to get the right property finance vehicle in place – whether that be a short term loan to fund a self build or an off plan property’s stage payments, a remortgage on an existing property at home or abroad, a leasing product such as the one Barclays Bank have just introduced that shields you from stamp duty, or a straight mortgage for non-residents.

The good thing about property in Portugal is the same as the bad thing about property in Portugal – and that’s that it is so popular!

The popularity of Portuguese real estate as a commodity means that it rents and resells well, retains its value and is protected by being in a mature market sector that is shielded from unsustainable price hikes or dramatic price drops - unlike properties in emerging real estate markets.  But this also means that as an investment commodity it is expensive to acquire.

However, another positive factor in Portuguese property’s favour is that because the Portuguese real estate market is so well understood, explored, regulated and protected many local and international mortgage lenders have a range of sophisticated and affordable home finance packages available for those who wish to buy in.

As a property investor you’ll already be well aware that it seldom makes sense to stow all your financial eggs in one basket or indeed invest all your dreams for prosperity in one single property – therefore by making the very most of the mortgages available for property in Portugal you can leverage your cash input and also protect your primary residence and any other investments you have from the Portuguese property market as well.

At Amberlamb we like to keep an independent perspective when it comes to discussing property with you, and to that end we will always suggest you shop around for everything from your estate agent and your lawyer to your property (of course), tenant and even your mortgage lender.  But at the same time we would like to mention that personally we recommend you take a look at Barclays Bank’s range of mortgages for property in Portugal…why?

Because not only is Barclays an international and a high street name, they have a strong local presence in Portugal, they have unique products available that can suit property investors very well such as their leasing product and their stage payment mortgage, because of their presence and size they can offer some of the best interest rates available and they are a massive banking institution unlikely to run off with all your money unlike some of the dodgy builders in emerging markets who offer to fund your purchase of their property!

If you want to get a breakdown of everything they offer simply click here, complete the form you’re redirected to and a Barclays’ representative will call or email you with details of their products.
