Panama Retirement Real Estate

The increase in the numbers of American pre-retirees or baby boomers buying up investment retirement real estate in Panama is causing an equally rising tide of economic advancement and resentment in certain favoured parts of this Central American paradise.

As many locals cash in on the demand for land and real estate by selling their assets and realising a fast profit, some who have already sold out feel cheated, others who have nothing to sell feel resentment while at the same time communities’ economies are being swelled by those buying affordable investment property in Panama.

In many emerging property markets in the world the story is the same.  Those who have already sold on their assets to the property investors, developers and those seeking properties abroad who come to their country with cash in hand feel an initial euphoria at the wealth they have gained before realising that they have sold off all they ever owned and that once sold real estate assets are gone forever.

The feeling in Panama particularly in the increasingly popular areas like Bocas del Toro seems to be divided between those who welcome the American baby boomers who are increasingly looking to Panama for retirement real estate now that previously favoured locations such as Mexico and Costa Rica are becoming pricier by the season, and those who resent the incomers.

The government in Panama are actively encouraging inward foreign direct investment into their property market, they are doing all they can to pave the way for investors, financiers and developers.  They welcome expatriate retirees and settlers and yet maybe they are not doing all they can to protect their own people, their unique and fragile environment and their beautiful country.

In certain areas it has been reported that protected mangroves, rain forests and land are being torn up for development and the action is continuing without intervention from the authorities.  If the baby boomers who wish to retire to Panama and invest in affordable real estate knew that this was the price of their new home they would most likely turn their back on Panama.  They would also turn away if they thought their presence was not welcome and their money was not going into the economies of the local communities in which they wish to live.

Maybe more needs to be done to protect the local people, the environment and also the future happiness and welfare of those who buy property in Panama otherwise the emerging real estate market will fail, those who have bought Panama retirement real estate will sell up and go where they are wanted and those who make a living from the growing numbers of foreign investors and buyers will go bankrupt.  And maybe more countries with emerging property markets around the world will learn from the lessons that Panama is teaching us.
